Melvin Sandoval’s carving style is simply stunning. He has become known for his smooth, polished pieces, with very little detail, and leaving a lot to the imagination. Melvin is San Felipe and Zuni and has been a dear friend and collected artists for over 35 years. We have seen his style change from the very detailed piece shown in Jim Ostler’s 1990 book, “The Fetish Carvers of Zuni” (pg.63), to this remarkable Owl. This piece was purchased in 2008 and has been donated to TKF by a generous collector. The proceeds will go directly to Zuni. Steatite is also called Black Pipestone. It is know for its dense and close grain. This Steatite Owl has rounded wings, with the wingspread measuring 6 3/8 inches wide. The body is 3 1/4 long and about 5/8 inches thick. $180. No Tax.
